Remove Blog Months

Siavash Mortazavi asked on September 15, 2015 00:02

Hi,

When I add a new blog post to my site, Kentico categorizes it under a month by default, and also includes the month in the URL. Is there a simple way to: 1. Add the blog posts directly under the blog page/folder that I have created? 2. Then also, exclude the month-year from the URL as well?

I would like to end up having something like mysite.com/blogs/category1/new-blog-title, and have the same page structure in the Pages application.

Thanks, Sia

Without writing a custom global handler this won't be possible automatically. You can manually do this and create your structure, but it's a manual process. Sure would be nice to have this as a setting you could configure by site.

I guess another approach would be to create Custom Page types that either inherits or is a cloned version of the blog & blog posts page types.

This is something that could work for your requirements.

Just something to remember is that going down the custom route would mean you would loose default Blog functionality that Kentico have introduced into the CMS as standard, but I think if you just want a Blog listing page and post pages, without the months, then you should be fine.

Also the other approach is to use what Brenden has suggested :)

Ilesh I was just talking about this with a client and they stated they don't need any of the out of the box functionality the blog is offering. So what we came up with is to simply create a "custom" page type and use that as blog posts. Very similar to how News and Article page types work.

It would be ideal if the blog had more settings around it where you could configure things like if you wanted the month or not.

Brenden,

Thank you so much, actually I was talking to a colleague about the same solution, but we're afraid the client wants some specific built-in features, like auto publishing to Facebook, tagging blogs, etc. which are not worth the time implementing from scratch.

The main reason I'm asking for this is because our SEO team say having month-year in the URL of the blog posts is very bad for SEO.

Cheers, Sia

@Siavash, you can still use all the OOTB features like auto publish to social media, etc. If you have an EMS license, these features are available with any page type, even custom ones you create, not just blog posts. So what I was suggesting is really that.
