Change page template through workflow

User Name asked on August 6, 2014 17:23

We have workflow turned on for our site, but when making changes to the Template tab in a document (Properties > Template), it does not have a 'Create new version' button. This wouldn't be too bad if the template change was added as an object task to content staging, but it is added as a content task.

Since Kentico considers switching templates a content task, is there any way to have it tracked through workflow?

Thanks.

Switching the template on a document is a content related item and should create a new version of that document. Changing settings on the template is an object related task and would create a new version of that object (template) if versioning is setup on objects.

You might check to see if objects are versioned and if they are tracked for Staging.

It doesn't seem to create a new version. I switched through a few different templates and the version is still 1.0.

It works for other properties tabs though. For example I can click on 'Metadata' and create a new version in workflow, make the needed changes now and then publish later.

Hi,

The page template object is not under content workflow - the metadata are part of the content so they are under the workflow. You can turn the object versioning on to cover the page templates.

Hi Juraj

Is this by design? When I switch the template on a page (ie. I'm not making any changes to the template layout, just changing which template my homepage is using) it does create a content staging task under the Documents tab. It seems that, like the metadata tab, it is part of the content then. Shouldn't all content related tasks be under workflow?

Thanks.

Ahh yes, my mistake, some of the items on the document properties tab are content related and some are not. There is no record of when a document has changed a template.

Yes, it is by design. The content staging is different from approval process - workflow. It creates the staging task because you need to add another template to the target document. I would call it change its settings, but it is still not a content change.
