Can you host search on a separate server?

Tomaso Pye asked on September 12, 2014 17:22

So we're prepping for our Kentico implementation and our current content sites use a 3rd party search engine that runs on a separate instance. Even if we had gone with the internal SharePoint search as our solution, it would still have ended up on a separate server for speed and stability.

Everything I have seen in the documentation leads to believe that this is not possible in Kentico and that Search must reside with the web servers. Is this correct, or is there any built in support to host search on a separate server?

Hello Tomaso,

You're right. The Smart search functionality doesn't support such a scenario out-of-the-box.

On the other hand, if you want functionality like this available in the feature version of Kentico, you can suggest it and also other users will be able to vote for it (more users = higher priority), on the special page: Kentico UserVoice

Best regards, Martin

You could have some search functionality like Google Search on your site but I believe you'd have to create some sort of integration with other 3rd party search engines if you'd want to have them search your site. RESTful services are very nice in Kentico and easy to work with and could be an option.

I appreciate the response. It sounds like this is not possible out of the box and the closest we could get is to wrap the API in a service on another box with some sort of replication for the lucene files from the kentico sites to the separate server.
