Why does the Kentico CMS V 13.0.95 Take forever to load a PDF

Mike Lovegren asked on September 28, 2023 16:30

Can someone tell me why the Kentico CMS is taking forever to upload PDF's and images. I have used many CMS systems and this one is the worst. My PDF is uploading and sitting at 100% but I get the spinning wheel of death. Fix your CMS Kentico

I found the issue. We are using StackPath to load balance the websites. There was a rule that was over writing and not allowing images to be upload. A fail safe to protect the servers.

I did check the Event Logs and that is how I found out about the server load balancing issues.

Thanks Mike

I've used Kentico since 2008 and the only times I have issues with files loading from the media library and/or the public site is when there are the following issues:

  • Incorrect configuration of the media files
  • Permissions not set properly on the server/web app
  • Large file sizes
  • Poor network connection (client and server side)
  • Not following Kentico's recommendations of having less than 100 items per folder/tree structure in the media library and/or content tree.

So provide some more information as to where you're having the slowness, what you've tried to resolve it, and possibly some code you're using to display those PDF files.

Brenden:

I am just trying to upload the PDF into the files library and it will get to 100% and just spin. When I posted this alert it was at 100% and is still at 100%.

Where can I check if the configuration or server/web app settings are at?

We had ZAG develop our sites and I just been experiencing this issue this week on all sites.

Brenden:

There are only 9 PDF's in the file folder and I have 1gig of up and download speed on my side.

Can you give me some details on your site's environment? Where it's hosted? On-prem or in the cloud? The size of the PDF? Are there any event log errors in the Kentico Event Log? If you have multiple sites and are now just experiencing the issue on ALL sites, then it's most likely some internal change to the system causing the problem.

If you're able to upload documents, then most likely the file type configuration is correct.

Regarding the up and down speed of your ISP, that's usually irrelivant if you're working from home, on a VPN, or in the office and uploading to the cloud. This is a whole other discussion though, but good to know you have good upload and download speeds.

I would recommend checking Event log as well as the browser development tools. My experience with 100% stuck upload is that there will be a 404 error - e.g. in the browser console. To be more particular, I would say it is 404.13 or 404.14 error. This could be caused by lower IIS upload limits which are by default around 4MB for request length and 29MB for content length. Please, check your IIS setup and limits set in the app's web.config file and increase them if you are uploading bigger files. Some details on this IIS setup are described in this KB article.

Glad you found the issue Mike! Even better that it wasn't an Kentico issue! :)
