v8.2 to v9.0 upgrade Tool

Teresa Boettcher asked on May 23, 2018 20:23

I am in the process of upgrading one of our Kentico sites. Started with Executing the Upgrade tool to see if any of our custom code will need to be changed. When I executed the Upgrade tool with the parameter to convert the code I noticed by looking at the csv file, the lines indicate Status of "Detected" with instructions to change a class method. I don't believe the code its referring to is custom. So what do I do now? The instructions say that the project that I am referring to is required to compile before I can run it again. But if I change the code, and I haven't installed the upgrade, I don't believe the code will compile. I don't know what I should do next.

It depends whether the license was registered under your account or someone elses account. You may need to check it within your company. Another option is that you are using FREE edition and in this case you need to generate new key in the FREE Edition section in the client portal.

Hi,
Not sure if you have seen already this article. Alsop, it is not clear what code you mean exactly. But you can make sure the project builds fine, then run the code upgrade tool to see what everything needs to be changed after the upgrade - or let the tool to generate the converted code. Upgrade your instance and apply the code changes.

Thanks for the article. I was able to upgrade to v9.0. Now when trying to reference the site I get a license error, indicating my license is invalid. How do I go about finding the license?

Hi,
After each major version upgrade you need to insert a new license key for given Kentico version.

Are you aware of the option to generate license keys via Kentico’s client portal? If not, here are some instructions:

You can now generate license keys in the Client Portal.

After you sign in, you need to go to Licenses section where you will see an overview of all the licenses in your property. Click on the Keys (second image button) option and you will see a list of previously generated keys for the specific license. Here you can submit following actions:

  • "Generate new full license key" - license key will be generated immediately, but will use up site limit from purchased license
  • "Ask for a domain alias" - license key won't use up the license site limit and still can be generated for whatever domain name, but will require our approval
  • "Ask for a non -production key" - domain names with special prefixes (dev, staging, test) for one of existing main domains are allowed automatically. For other domain name, 7-day key is provided immediately and after our approval expiration can be prolonged

  • "Upgrade all keys to the latest version" - valid maintenance at the time of the given version release is required. Existing keys for your current version will still work until you upgrade Kentico and switch the keys.

You can also edit every license and add a project name as well as client name for better overview. Please take a look at the Client portal guide for step-by-step instructions.

Managing license keys on your own has some advantages and is a simple process. By generating license key(s) on your own, you can obtain the key immediately, and you will have a record of this key in the client portal for future reference.

When I display he Kentico Client Portal, there are no licenses found. I don't see the keys option either. I see a plus sign with the words "Register License", that's all. I could be in the wrong place but I see the same screen the client portal link you provided brings me to.
