Page Alias Character Limit

James Mosquito asked on August 5, 2021 17:23

Hi,

Is it possible to increase the character limit on page aliases?

Currently, a document saved with a name longer 50 characters will be truncated into the url alias field. This becomes a problem when the page name is changed and we want to update the page alias and add the existing page alias as an alternative url.

The crops don't always conform to the 50 character limit meaning that we aren't able to reliably replicate the behaviour ahead of time to determine what the new alias will be. If the crop results in the alias matching a previously added alternative url we then have a conflict on the page that needs to be resolved which is troublesome when dealing with 5000+ products.

Thanks, James

I would recommend not doing any of those changes mentioned by Sunil. As you can see, those instructions were removed from newer versions documentation and it was done for a reason. I have also discussed this topic few weeks back in this thread.
We have removed those things because it was causing serious issues and data loss in certain situations and also upgrading/hotfixing could become a nightmare.

If the limitations of the built-in routing are causing too many problems then you might want to look at custom routing where you have a lot more control over the URLs (and you can source URL segments from other data sources like a Custom Module Class)
