Moving a web part zone from page layout to master page layout without losing content

In my site I have a master page layout and page layout. There are many pages in my site with content. If I move a web part zone from page layout to master page layout, will the content be preserved, so long as the web part zone keeps its ZoneID?

Assuming you don't have that webpart ID on another page it should work. Don't worry, if it's an editable text webpart, it will be stored with the page. You can go to the Properties>General tab and scroll to the bottom and look for the Edit regions and webparts button and find your webpart ID and content there.

Thanks Brendon, In the end I chickened out and did it another way. The content was all sorts of different webparts.
