Kentico Server for Disaster Recovery

Vicky Barraza asked on March 28, 2017 16:24

Hello all, I would like to find out how does licensing work when you want to have a second server on stand by for Disaster Recovery at a separate facility from your main production data center?, Do I need 2 Kentico Production Licenses per site for this purpose?, is there documentation available about this subject that can be provided? any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

If you have a single web server and a single database server that are active and then a single web server and single database server that are passive, NO you do not need to have 2 licenses.

If you want to have a load balanced setup where you have 2 or more servers in a web farm, you will need to purchase an additional license for the additional servers in the web farm. That being said, you can still have your active/passive setup with a web farm environment as well without additional need for another license.

Keep in mind the above are talking about 2 different things:

  • active and passive servers
  • load balancing

It depends on if you try to setup the DR with it's own web + SQL server or if you want to just load balance the web server.

If you only load balance the web server, then you will need web farm key for 2 servers for one site. If it's a cold stand by which you do your back/restore or sync, and only change the DNS to point to it. Then you don't need separate license.

I think it's not documented as it's the grey area of licensing.
