Kentico MVC Development vs Portal Engine

Emma Kee asked on November 6, 2023 13:07

We have a large Kentico 11 site built with Portal Engine and we are starting the process of upgrading to Kentico 13. Now our dev team is saying that will it be a full rewrite with almost none of the pre-built components available that made the original site so easy to build. I would like to know from any who have gone through this process already, does it end up being a significant difference in effort assuming a like-for-like site rebuild? https://kodi.software/ https://dltutuapp.com/tutuapp-download/

Your dev team is right, The switch from Portal Engine to MVC is a significant change and is a different technology altogether. We've migrated several sites over and some are easier than others, but all of them require a rewrite.

Brenden is correct - a lot depends on the solution. Most of our partner agencies have been migrating customers successfully from Portal Engine to MVC since 2019 and they will all tell you the same thing.

A member of our community built a set of tools to migrate Portal Engine sites to Kentico Xperience 13.

These might work for you and help you adopt the MVC development approach, but you might end with a new coat of paint on content and marketing strategies that are not well aligned with Kentico Xperience 13.

Whether you try these tools or rewrite your solution, your team will absolutely need to be familiar with ASP.NET Core and MVC technologies. Fortunately, ASP.NET MVC has been around since 2009 and ASP.NET Core has been around since 2016, so there are many resources available to help developers understand them.
