Kentico license question for sub-domain as separate installation

Al Burns asked on February 5, 2021 15:46

Hi.

I have a client that currently has a V11 site and are looking to upgrade to V12 portal engine (not MVC due to budgetary restrictions). They currently have an enterprise level V11 license.

They also want a new sub-domain site developing, ideally in MVC, and I wanted to ask a question regarding the sub-domain license and which version of Kentico I should build the sub-domain site in.

I know you can't mix portal engine and MVC sites within the same Kentico installation, so is it feasible to have their main site running on V12 portal engine with a V12 upgraded domain license, and have a completely separate V13 .NET Core sub-domain site using a fresh Xperience installation running on a V13 sub-domain license created from the existing domain license, i.e. they won't have to purchase a separate license?

I hope this all makes sense! Many thanks.

So you answered YES to several questions:

  • 2 different sites?
  • 2 different domains?
  • different content in each site?

So yes, it will have to be a new license. When generating a key for a given license, the generation process doesn't care if it's a top-level domain or a subdomain of that top-level domain, both are unique keys for that given license. Since you don't have a license that supports more than one full key, then you'll need to purchase another license. Choosing to use a domain alias key will cause legal problems later when your license is audited by Kentico.

These sound like they are 2 different sites. By sites, I mean domains. So in that case, no this breaks the licensing rule.

So now backing up a bit more, can you explain in more detail what the v12 site would be and what the v13 site would be? Are they:

  • 2 different sites?
  • 2 different domains?
  • different content in each site?
  • have the same content but a different brand?
  • have the same content tree but a child node with a different brand i.e.: domain.com/Sub-Company

If you answered yes to any of those questions, you need a new license. Trying to work your way around purchasing a license will only cause problems later.

Hi Brenden.

The V12 site will be an upgrade of the existing V11 site, so V11 portal engine -> V12 portal engine.

The client then wants a sub-domain with new content. Normally this would be created as a second site within the admin portal and using a sub-domain license created from the main domain license, but this would also have to be portal engine.

My question was whether this 2nd site could be created using Xperience V13 and .NET Core, i.e. under a fresh Kentico installation, using a V13 sub-domain license key created from the main domain license?
