After the trial license expires and I tried editing content via the CMS Administration or I try uploading an item such a pdf or image. I get the following message "Feature 'Staging' is not available in the Kentico edition you are using. See event log for more details." and it renders the image invalid or kind of useless.

Of course. You will need to purchase the appropriate license to use certain features of Kentico. If you are using the free version there are only certain features that are available. I recommend you look at the different editions and determine what features you need and acquire the appropriate license.

As Charles mentioned its only available for certain licenses. To be more specific, Ultimate and EMS are the only licenses in which that feature is available. You can see the details here.
