[Kentico 8] How to add a custom field on CMS.Categories

Victor Hugo Garcia asked on April 25, 2014 16:13

Hello friends,

I'm having a small issue trying to add a custom field to system categories, I need to store a value in a field by using custom settings or some how in the category.

I went to Modules -> Categories -> Edit -> User Interface there all buttons are disabled and it says: Cannot edit anything.

Is there any other missing step I'm missing? I also tried Modules -> Categories -> Classes -> Alternative Form and it does not appear neither when adding a new category.

Any help is always welcome.

Thanks

The short answer is you can't without making manual database changes. I'd give the long answer but not sure I'd want to since it really isn't best practice to hack it. What is this custom field for? Every document or just for all categories?

Brenden is basically right. If you could describe what this custom field would be for, maybe we could find a workaround which would be suitable for you.

I have this same need. My scenario is the client wants to have a list of categories with an image for the category. I'd like to give them a media selection control to select the image.

Was there ever any additional info on this? Similar to Joel's request, we also have a client that would like to associate colors with categories for use with the calendar display.

Thanks, Pam
