Upgrade Kentico 12 MVC to Kentico 13 .Net core

Chad Tran asked on August 25, 2021 12:36

Dear the support team,

Regarding to upgrading article. If I want to upgrade from Kentico 12 MVC to Kentico 13 .NET core, how I can do it?

Do we have any relevant article or guideline documents for this upgrading? And the way to migration data from upgrading?

P/s: I found this article from your document, but it did not mention to upgrade directly from K12 MVC to K13 Core.

Should we upgrade from K12 MVC to K13 MVC firstly then migrate to .Net core as this?

Best regards,

Since MVC 5 and .Net Core are using bit different technologies/frameworks, direct upgrade is not possible. You can either upgrade Kentico 12 MVC to Kentico Xperience 13 MVC and then do the code migration for .Net Core or, you can install Kentico Xperience 13 .Net Core and do the Core development right ahead. You can find more details on the code migration in the Migrating ASP.NET MVC 5 projects to ASP.NET Core documentation.

Run the Kentico Upgrade Utility (Upgrade.exe). Enter the path to your Kentico 12 web project folder (you can select a folder using the Browse button). Use the utility to back up your project files and/or database if you have not done so already. Select whether you want to upgrade files, the database or both. dgcustomerfirst

@Ronnie - what you have described will upgrade just the Kentico admin app. Not the front end MVC app.

@Ronnie - I've placed my thoughts on the subject and blogged about migrating from Kentico MVC5 to Kentico .NET Core / .NET 5 How to Migrate from .NET MVC 5 to .NET Core for Kentico Xperience

Let me know if you find it helpful or not!

@Juraj - I'd be curious on your feedback as well.
