SQL Edition

Matthew H asked on January 28, 2022 09:12

Dear,

Which Microsoft sql edition can i use for a kentico website that are hosted onprem ? Is the web edition enough ? Perhaps the express setup could do the job ? Or do i have to use the standard edition which is more expensive ?

Is there "any rules" to determine which version i have to used ?

Thanks all !

Well, yes - but then this is more question for SQL community to give you some idea what edition can handle what load. Kentico does not care what SQL server edition you are using.

Hi Matthew,

According to the docs even the Express version will do, however for production websites I wouldn't recommend it.

Hi Dmitry,

And for production websites is the web edition enough ? What are you recommendations between the standard and web edition for a "classic" website as we encountered all days :) ?

This depends on what load the SQL server should handle - so it depends on the project and its implementation.

Dear Juraj,

So, if the server load match the web edition limitation, i can use it without any "licensing" trouble ? The license price is very different from web to standard, so that's why i'm asking.

Hi Matthew,

Kentico uses the basic SQL DB Engine features, so the Web edition should be enough for you, unless you want to use other SQL Server features, e.g. clustering, data warehouse, analysis services, etc.

Please note also the Scale limits for Web edition which I think should be enough for your needs.
