Smart Search showing pdf's when cms.file is not included in search

We have a site with a smart search that shows pdf files even though we have set them cms.file to be excluded from the search and we also have not checked the include document attachments. anything else i may be missing?

Could you please provide me more information?

What version are you using? How exactly do you store the PDF file? What kind of index and analyzer are you using? Are you able to reproduce the issue with newly created index?
