Anand Dev Singh asked on June 27, 2014 07:01

Hi Team,

I have developed a Kentico based site and placed some .pdf files in a particular folder into the site and those .pdf files are configured in anchor tag to be downloaded by user. But when i am searching for pdf file by there name using smart search box, and showing results in smart search results. It is not showing any result. Where as the search box is able to search all other documents types and page contents on the site.

Any help will be highly appreciable.

Have you configured the search index to include the cms.file document type? By default, I believe it is not included.

Hi,

Yes you are right , there was default selection , but i have read article from here : http://devnet.kentico.com/docs/5_5beta/communitysiteguide/index.html?creating_a_smart_search_index.htm and created a new index same as shown in article, and given the path = /% , but still it is not able to search the PDF files. I would like to inform you that my "PDF files" folder is not visible in content tab of the site. SO please help me more on the same.

What version are you working with? What are the other settings for the search index? Is the document types box empty? That would search all doc types by default.

When you say ""PDF files" folder is not visible in content tab of the site" do you mean its a physical folder in the file system? If so, your index won't search those. They have to be in the content tree to take advantage of the smart search index.

Hi,

Thanks for your response .

I am using Kentico v7.0.34. Other settings of Search index are as :

1) Path : /% 2) Document type : _________ (Its empty) 3) Include ad-hoc forums: Checked True 4) Include blog comments: Checked True 5) Include message boards: Checked True 6) Include categories: Checked True.

Yes "PDF files" are in physical folder of my project. Its location is as : My Project > media > pdf > "Now here are different folders with different category of pdf files." and i need to search files from all folders under pdf folder.

Could you please suggest me, how to make physical folder to be in content tree.

Thank You.

So are the files also located in the media library within Kentico? I believe there is a webpart for media library searching although I don't believe it uses the smart search functionality. If you're files are not uploaded within the Medial Library in Kentico then you would have to create your own search functionality for this as Kentico's smart search doesn't search physical file folders you'd specify.

There is a module in the Marketplace that allows for this type of behavior and will import it into the Media Library although it is only for v5.5. I was working on one for 7.x but the client decided to go a different route so I stopped development on it.
