Page types and templates

Tom Troughton asked on March 25, 2015 12:46

Is it possible to associate a page type with a default template? It seems to me that you'd typically design a specific template to work with a specific page type, but as far as I can tell when adding a new structured page Kentico inherits the parent template by default. It seems to be that this is over-complicating things for a typical user who I wouldn't expect to need to differentiate between all the available templates.

I understand the point that with repeaters a single template can be used for listing and detailing a structured type. But from my perspective it's likely that a listing and detail page will actually contain very different content in reality so really would most likely use different templates.

Your thoughts appreciated.

What your describing will work well if you have a one to one relationship with an actual viewable page and an actual page type. But if you use multiple page types to display content on a single viewable page, then this approach won't work. There are multiple ways of designing a site and these are just two of them, which is why Kentico is so flexible.

To answer your question, yes you can assign a default template to a page type, you can find this setting on the General tab of the page type's definition.
