Page editing changing template settings/ structure / web part configurations

Nathan Tritt asked on August 6, 2014 21:24

I have a template that I am using all over my site. I want to be able to update the configuration settings on some of the web parts or add whole new web parts or hide certain sections. However when I do any of these edits it is reflected in every page that shares the same template (even in the template editor).

Is there a way to make changes to a page without seeing those changes be reflected in the template? i.e. making the template not coupled with a page that uses it.

Instead of using the widget, use the editable text webpart on your template. In that you can add the YouTube video and change the URL on any page that template is used. If you have other things to go with that video, you could create a new doc type and create the embed video on your own in the transformation.

In the template itself use a placeholder webpart, then in the individual pages, you can add different webparts and change configuration options.

hey Joshua thanks for answering my question so fast.

I want to clarify my question a little and provide an example to ensure I am utilizing the best practice for Kentico.

lets say I have 10 pages, all of them use the same template. This template has a YouTube widget. The only difference between these pages is the URL that the YouTube widget would use. Currently in this example when you configure the URL, that URL is pushed to all pages that use that template. What is the best way to handle this situation in Kentico?

thanks in advance.

Hi Nathan,

With addition to Brenden comment, you can use ad-hoc template which is used only by one specific page.

Thanks Brenden! I did the document type/transformation combination and it appears to be solving my problem.

If we run into more issues I might take the route that Ashish suggested with teaching the content authors how to ad-hoc a template to keep the template generic.

thanks everyone! Nate.
