Page anchors

Kristen Odegaard asked on May 20, 2021 22:17

I have been unsuccessful in adding an anchor and getting external links to work the page with this CMS. I can't find documentation on it, is this something I can't do with HTML?

Thanks, Kristen

Hi Kristen,

How are you attempting to add the page anchors?

Depending on where and how you are adding them, perhaps the first search result is just what you're looking for:

I added them using the WYSIWYG and with HTML code, I and tested both. I've tried < p id="video" >< a id="video" name="video" >< /a > < /p > and < a id="video" name="video ">< /a >. I put the anchor just below the video I want to show above the fold. I am trying to link to them from an external (HTML email) and the link seems ignored. When I just test the link in a browser it ignores the anchor. https://www.cas.ca/en/annual-meeting/cas-annual-meeting/cas-annual-meeting#video and drops the "video". I have done this successfully on other platforms, so I don't think it's an error on my part.

I've had a look at your page and it looks like the first time that URL is visited, the anchor is indeed dropped from the URL as you mention. However, if I paste the URL into the browser again, the anchor is retained and it works as intended. However, if I try again, it's dropped. It seems to work every 2nd time. I'm using Chrome to test. I'm wondering if there is something on your page or in your site that might be processing the URL?

Good catch Jake. The same in Firefox. I noticed there are some warnings and also errors for some requests - so that could be part of the problem as well as when I checked the page using W3C Validator, it is not valid and there are some errors and warnings too. Then, for one of the failed requests I see in the browser console that NGINX is used - so maybe some load balancer or proxy is on the way. And this is maybe the cause of the issue. But still, I would recommend looking into the HTML validation issues as broken HTML can cause some headache too.
