Kentico - File Sharing

Jakub Holovsky asked on November 18, 2014 04:28

We are working for a client that uses Kentico 6. They would like to create something like a "drop box" feature in Kentico.

Basically it should be a folder that you can share with different people and they have access to it either when they log in or via a link. The files are mostly documents which would point to a document library in Kentico. (in future this situation might change and the upload will not be limited to documents only)

Another requirement is to get alerts when someone uploads a document into the folder.

They are also considering upgrading to version 8 of Kentico.

Is there any feature in Kentico 6 vs Kentico 8 that would be the most suitable for us?

Have you looked at any of the "Groups" features in version 8? I can't see v6 having any features that v8 doesn't. In fact, it will be much easier to implement this type of custom functionality using v8 than it wil be to use v6. Sounds like a great time to perform an upgrade!

Hi Jakub!

As Brenden briefly mentioned even with version 8, you'd probably need to do some customizations. The 'alerts' are currently not built-into Kentico, but hooking up to a global event that's fired when a new file is created and doing what's necessary for the 'alert' to appear should do the trick.

If you're not sure how you can add functionality or create a new module extending Kentico's functions, don't worry. It's all in the documentation.
