Impact of Windows upgrades on Xperience

kentico team nextscape asked on January 5, 2023 13:45

Hi, all.

Have any of you ever done an in-place upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2 with Xperience installed and then upgraded to Windows Server 2016? And have you experienced any issues when doing so?

Would you be willing to share information about any problems you experienced during the upgrade?

I've not done an in-place server operating system upgrade, but I can tell you if you're running Kentico 13 or earlier, it runs on both operating systems. So hypothetically speaking, you shoudn't have any problems. If you're doing the upgrade, you should just go to Server 2019 or 2022 honestly.

Thank you all for the information.

It seems that you all have no experience with in-place upgrades, but what do you do when an OS upgrade is needed as in this case?

Do you build a new machine, install the OS, install Xperience, and deploy your code?

Our machines are vitrual. We don't invest in physical machines any longer. It's faster for us to stand up a new virtual machine from an image we have already in place, then deploy code to it. The installer for Kentico is and should NEVER be installed on a server (development, production or otherwise).
