how to set up sales tax by state with unique products for that state

Suzanne Artzberger asked on June 28, 2023 19:23

We have a use case where states have different requirements for what products have sales tax applied. Is there a way to use Kentico to set up tax requirements for different states? For example, we sell product A to State ABC, which taxes the product at 6% we sell product A to State XYZ, which doesn't require us to collect sales tax on that product.

In Products, I can only assign a single tax class to that product A. So, I don't see how we can use the Kentico taxes architecture to collect taxes on the appropriate product. Or am I missing something? Thanks, Suzi Artzberger

In v13 E-Commerce you CAN set tax values by state already. On the product you define the class you will use. The tax class has the definition for the country and state tax values. If you don't want a product to have any tax applied, then don't apply a tax class to the product.

Yes, thanks! I'll need to set up tax classes based on the product segregation that meets our needs.

I think the key here is once you define the tax class(es) and state taxes for each of those classes, you'll need to assign them to each product. Keeping in mind each product can only be assigned ONE tax class. Therefore only being able to accept one state's tax amount per product.
