how to create a tagging filter

alan gerling asked on December 5, 2015 03:08

i need help creating a tagging filter for a set of articles in kentico.

i have 3 different tag types that i need articles tagged with (industry, topic and format). the industry and topic tags need to be multi-select and the format tag is single select. right now i've created 3 separate custom tables and added a field to my page type so publishers can tag the pages. this seems to be working (but not sure its the best approach). the tags need to be a pre-defined set (no free-form text entry)

on the front end i need visitors to be able to multiple select tags from each of the pre-defined tag types to filter the list of articles. can someone give me a little help on how this should be done?

the kentico support team suggests using the custom tables for my tagging needs.

Why not use the out of the box tagging features Kentico has vs. building your own? You could create your own form control then that does some custom work to display the tags for a specific group so there is no free form entry.

If tags won't work (seems like a bit more coding that needs to be), I'm pretty sure you can use categories and create a category filter for those items on the front side. This will allow exactly what you're looking for.
