How long to install Kentico 8.2?

Matt Latham asked on May 20, 2015 14:23

Hello,

Quick question. I already have kentico 5.5 on a server, however we are going to install a new instance of Kentico 8.2 on the same server. All pre-requisites are present on the server, we only need to install Kentico 8.2 and the import a site.

Could anyone provide with approximate timelines (in hours) for:

  1. Installing Kentico 8.2 on a server with all pre-requisites present
  2. Import a site (quite small - only about 100 pages and very little media)

Thanks,

Matt

Hi,

hope you are not trying to import 5.5 site to 8.2 because that won't work. Kentico install with latest hotfix takes from 20 to 30 min.

Here is what we do:

  1. Install and customize (remove stuff that you don't need) Kentico on local computer (no database, only files)
  2. Register local Kentico install in KIM and download latest hotfix (run hotfix on files)
  3. Create database and user
  4. Copy Kentico into virtual directory on server
  5. Start site and finish database installation (skip part with template installation, import your site)

If you have access to SQL from you computer, then step 5-4 can be run from local and then migrated to a server.

Hope this helps.

If I were you, I wouldn't "install" Kentico on your production server. There's no reason to install the actual software on your server. Install that locally on a machine and deploy the code to the server. Doing so for someone who has done it many times before would take less than an hour. For someone who has never done it, could take 1-4 hours or more if they don't know what they are doing or have never setup a site.

Regarding importing a site, is this an 8.0, 8.1 or 8.2 site you plan to import? If not, you'll have to go through an upgrade process first:

  • 5 -> 6
  • 6 -> 7
  • 7 -> 8
  • 8 -> 8.1
  • 8.1 -> 8.2

Hello Petar,

Thanks for the quick response.

We will be importing an Kentico 8 site into our new installation.
