Edit the Live URL

Mike Paulin asked on March 5, 2014 14:51

I have some page URLs that are too long (greater than 115 characters) and I wish to shorten the URLs. These pages were flagged for correction for SEO purposes. I edited the 'Alias' under URLs on the properties tab for the page. When I shortened the URL, a 'Document Alias' was created and I deleted it. I then re-ran the SEO report and the page was still flagged for to long a URL, even though the shortened URL is shown in the browser address bar. I found what I think is the culprit and that is the 'Live URL' on the 'general' tab under the page properties. The 'Live URL' shows the original URL that is too long and I think the SEO report is capturing this URL instead of the good URL that shows in the browser address bar. Where do I start looking to shorten this 'Live URL'? Thanks

I don't believe the problem is with the Live Url or an alias, I believe you need to check the Use custom URL path checkbox in the pages Properties>URLs tab and set the URL there. For instance if your original URL is /Some-thing/Really/Really/Super-Duper/Long, you'd set the custom URL path to /Some-thing/Long. The URL you'd access it by then would be /Some-thing/Long and this would modify your Live URL as well. When you change that it will add /Some-thing/Really/Really/Super-Duper/Long as an alias, which is desirable but also ensure your setting in the Site Manager>Settings>URLs & SEO>Redirect document alias to main URL is checked.

Hi,

Thank you for your message.

Just to verify what Brenden already said. When you go to Properties -> URLs tab try checking Use custom URL Path and then enter your own Path or Pattern field. Once you save this you will see new updated URL in **Properties -> General ** tab.

Let us know if you need anything else.

Kind regards,

Thanks Brenden and Richard for your replies. I followed the steps outlined above in your messages. The 'live URL' updated to the shortened URL, however, the Name path URL (Properties / general tab) did not update. I ran the SEO report again and I still get the page flagged for long URL. SEO scan must be picking up the Name path URL. I am now also accumulating a collection of 301 redirects when making these changes. Is there a way to get the Name path URL to update to the shortened URL. Thanks

Mike,

I think you need to look at the URLs and SEO section in the Site Manager>Settings. There are many settings in there that can affect this. The main ones I look at are:

  • Remember original URLs when moving documents (true)
  • Automatically update document alias (true)
  • Allow permanent (301) redirection (this is desirable for SEO reasons) (true)
  • Default replacement document (if you delete a doc, it will redirect to this one by default, unless you specify one when deleting it)
  • Redirect document aliases to main URL (true)

Also, if you are using workflow and have not yet published your document, the URLs will not change. Another thing you might try is saving document on the Form tab, then saving on the Properties>URLs tab. Depending on that doc types, settings, the URL might be strictly based on a document type field.

Brenden,

Thanks for your help.

I went through my URLs and SEO settings under Settings to review your above list. Below is what I have: * Document URLs - 'Remember original URLs when moving documents' - true * Search engine optimization (SEO) - 'Allow permanent (301) redirection' - true 'Redirect document aliases to main URL' - true

All other boxes are empty (no check mark)

What do you mean by this - Another thing you might try is saving document on the Form tab, then saving on the Properties>URLs tab. Depending on that doc types, settings, the URL might be strictly based on a document type field.

I do not use workflow.

I will wait until Monday to run my SEO scan again.

On your document type you can define if you want to use a separate field for the DocumentName or use one of the fields you created for the Document name source field (dropdown below the field list on the doc type). For instance, on the Event document type, EventName is used for the DocumentName. The URL is generated off of the DocumentName. I've found sometimes if I didn't have things set properly (checkboxes above) I'd have to go back to get them in sync by simply re-saving the form with no changes.
