easiest way to unpublish a node and its children

I tried using workflow, but the pages throw a "site redirected you too many times." for all the pages that were "archived" ... is there a way to site a publish-to date that is inherited to all children?

Are you just looking for a way to hide a node and its children from public view? If that's the purpose, set the permission of the node to require authentication, and everyone read to deny will do the trick. All child nodes will inherit that setting.

Have you tried clicking the parent node, then clicking Listing at the top of the content tree in the Pages application. Then scroll to the bottom & select All Pages, Archive
