this might be a dumb question, but i'm somehow stuck. i have 2 drop downs, the first one's options are fixed. the 2nd one's option should change depending on the selection of the first one. typical ajax so far, and i know how to do this in a "normal" website. but how is this done in a web part?

Set it up as you "normally" would and then when you place the webpart on a page template, check the box at the bottom of the webpart configuration to place an update panel around it.
