Adding fields to Page (menu item)

I would like to add an additional field to the built in Page (menu item) page type. Will this cause problems when upgrading in the future or any other issues? If this were a new site I'm assuming the best practice would be to create a new page type that inherits from Page (menu item) and add the additional field(s) there. In my case I have an existing site with many pages and from what I understand page types can't be converted to other page types.

Use caution, yes, but it can be done. It's an out of the box page type with some custom actions behind it. I ADD fields to it all the time and have upgraded v5, v6, v7 and v8 instances with no problem. I NEVER remove the base fields or change field names of the base fields.

Hi,

It will require caution when upgrading or applying a new hotfix.

If you really don't want to adjust this you can ask is it really necessary to place this new field on the form tab? You can also save data in a new widget or custom table.
