Understanding the new Category Module
Hi
I am not sure if I understand the use of the new global and custom category feature.
So far, I found out that custom categories are only displayed to the user that owns these categories. What would be a possible use for that? I am sure you had something in mind once you designed it this way.
For the global categories: If I define global categories in the site manager, will these categories be displayed on ALL sites or only the current?
Meaning, that for transformations i.e. you can tell the system to make this tarnsformation available to a certain site. I can't find that for categories. (I only have one site running under 4.0, so I cannot make thsi test...)
Thanks ralph

RE:Understanding the new Category Module
Hi
I would like to add a question: How can I localize these categories?
If I have a category "dogs" in an English site, I guess the name for it should be "chien" for the French site.
I see that I have to add each page of each culture individually to the categories, but at least I should not have to double, or triple the categories....
Thanks ralph

RE:Understanding the new Category Module
Hi,
In the category names you can use localization macros - http://www.kentico.com/docs/devguide/appendix_a___macro_expressions.htm. You need to add the strings for the localization keys as well.

RE:Understanding the new Category Module

CMS.GlobalHelper.ResHelper.LocalizeString("{$=Ultrasound|el-gr=Υπερηχογραφήματα$}")
{$=Ultrasound|el-gr=Υπερηχογραφήματα$}
but I can't achive!
Thanks,
John

RE:Understanding the new Category Module
Hi, Whare are you using this code? What I meant is to use the {$macro$} directly in the category name in Site Manager -> Development -> Categories. Then, for appropriate culture you need to add new string with the key from the macro. So the name would be resolved according to the culture. It is very similar to this description about e-commerce localization. Best Regards, Juraj Ondrus

RE:Understanding the new Category Module
Hello Ralph, You can define global categories which are common for all users. They can be more general. But every user is special and has its own needs. So each user can make its own categories so other users can't see them. It can be useful for security and personal reasons. Yes, if you define global categories in Site Manager they are common for all sites within one instance of Kentico CMS. Since it's quite new feature, it's unfortunately not possible to make category for particular site. But we can expect improvements in one of the next version. Best regards Ondrej Vasil

RE:Understanding the new Category Module
Hello, It's unfortunately not supported now. We'll see what we could do about it. I believe it could be available in one of the next version of Kentico CMS. Best regards, Ondrej Vasil

RE:Understanding the new Category Module
We have been experiencing error messages with the Categories module. We created Global Categories in Site Manager and would like to have users with the CMS Desk only Roles (i.e. Designer, Content Editor, or CMS Desk Administrator) assign their documents to one of these pre-defined Global Categories. When the user attempts to do this assignment, a "must have modify permissions" error is reported. All of these roles are enabled with Modify permissions for the Article document type (in question) bu the error is still thrown. There does not seem to be a way to adjust permissions for the Categories module. Can we only have users with Admin permissions do this Category assignment? Please help!
Thanks!

RE:Understanding the new Category Module
I'm sorry - I believe I just resolved this on my own by adjusting permissions under the User Interface Module. My apologies.

RE:Understanding the new Category Module
I spoke too soon - it does appear that even with this change if I remove "is global administrator" from the user's account, the ability to assign an item to a global category fails. Any insight would be helpful. Thank you.

RE:Understanding the new Category Module
Hello,
Please add this permission to your role: Modules -> Users -> Modify
Unfortunately, it is a bug in the current version which is fixed in the next (4.1) version. We are sorry for your inconveniences.

RE:Understanding the new Category Module
I'd like to add a vote for hierarchical categories. It's not in the current demo site.
This functions more like a tag list.
I'm looking for an alternative to DNN and was greatly excited to see categories listed on the features but severely disappointed to find single level functionality.

RE:Understanding the new Category Module
Hello, Thank you for your suggestion. We plan to add this feature to Kentico CMS in the 5.1 version which should be released in the first quarter of 2010. Best regards, Helena Grulichova
