Hi Gavin,

You could eventually use customization of E-commerce module and add user (customer) to some role after he finishes order (clicks on "Order now" button). You would also set the file to be accessible only for this role (each file will need to have special role). The file could be downloadable in the detail view of the product.

We are planning to implement this feature into one of next versions. We will try to make it into next version 3.2 planned for October, but unfortunately I can't guarantee it for now.
