Storing smart search index externally

Hi, I have got 2 different servers running kentico 12 instances each. Smart search is setup and stores the index locally. My question is instead of storing the index locally under ~/CMSApp/App_Data/CMSModules/SmartSearch folder, is it possible to store on external storage (Azure/Amazon). Such that that we avoid using webfarm for file syncing and as well both the kentico instances refer to the same externally stored smart search index.

Where in the application/cms the index path (/CMSApp/App_Data/CMSModules/SmartSearch) is defined?
