How many page versions to keep

Brandon White asked on October 2, 2018 20:31

Wondering how many page versions others are keeping and if you see a performance hit when keeping more? I think 10 is standard out of the box. Our site has ~20,000 pages and we want to up our versions from 10 to possibly 15-20 in order to maintain more history. Anyone running a site around this size with 15-20+ page versions?

Are you talking about Content\Content Management\Version History Length? I think it is 20 by default. To me is more the question how often do pages get changed. If you change pages quite often - you need a longer history. I personally think 10 should be enough, but it really depends on your setup.

Also check the settings minor and major versions. Usually you need a few minor versions for accidental changes and a few Major for just proving who did (break) what.

It can add up mainly to your DB size, performance wise it should take a while before it impacts.

Note: when you change the number of history items to keep, it won't magically remove all old data. As soon as someone creates a new version of an object/page Kentico will clean up older versions that fall out of the limit for that specific item.
