Widgets

Hi, I come from alternate CMS development environments and looking to learn more about the Kentico environment. Are there such a thing as widget developers? For environments such as Joomla / Magento - there are external developers who create the Kentico equivalent of widgets. Is there no sense of this within the Kentico environment? Apologies if this is a strange question to ask I am new to Kentico.

Hi,

Do you have a specific Widget that you had in mind? Widgets are inherited from Web Parts so almost any Kentico web part you find can translated into a widget.

At Pull Digital we have created quite a number of webparts and some are already in the marketplace.

In most cases Kentico provides a flexible way of working with content and you can easily create a widget that is based around the repeater Web Part.

For example if you want to display news items and let the user choose the number of items to display you can base the widget on a repeater and expose the property to show number of data rows.

On other CMS systems you may see things like article lists or news list web parts but this is generally very simple to do on Kentico to make it into the marketplace.

Hello,

The web parts are the basic elements of site functionality in Kentico CMS and as such are placed by site developer in design mode. Widgets are meant for page customization, either by content editor, or user and can be placed in zones selected by site developer. All widgets are based on a web part and almost any web part can be turned into a widget, however some features may be limited by doing so. The feasibility depends very much on the functionality you are attempting to create. Here you can find Web part overview, Widgets overview and Web part and Widget development tutorial.
