Creating a new custom document type but not availble in the list
 Hi, I am attempting to create a custom document type and create objects/pages from that document type. I have attached a screen shot to showcase the area I would typically think this would show up. What other steps are needed to make this appear here so I can choose the new custom document type? Thanks! Justin

Hello,
You need to choose parent document types for your custom document type to allow under which documents you will be able to create your new one. You can do it in the Site Manager -> Development -> Document types -> (edit) Your custom document type -> Child types (tab) -> Allowed parent document types -> Add document types and here you need to add atleast the Page (menu item) document type.

I am actually using 5.x and I don't see the allowed parent document types option. I tried what you said regardless, adding page as a child type of the custom document type as well as adding the custom document type as a child type of page with no luck.
Any other ideas? I am at a complete loss.

Hello,
It really depends under which document type do you want to create your new custome one. If you want to add your document type under the cms.News document type, you need to go to the Site Manager -> Development -> Document types -> (edit) News -> Child types (tab) and add there your custom document type.
P.S.: Please add your post to appropriate section (version 5.x) next time.

Sorry about not adding it to 5.x. Is there anything else which I can do? The child types does not seem to work. I have tried that in several different ways... making page a child type of my new custom type, making my new custom type a child type of page, and experimented in the same fashion with other high level document types. Please help! Every other CMS I have dealt with, once I have created the blueprint of my object types, I can immediately start creating objects. This is overly frustrating at this point that something so simple is holding me up...

This is strange. It has to work. I have checked your screenshot again and I've noticed, that you are trying to create your custom document type under a document called TrainingTypes. What document type is this document? It is necessary to add your custom document type as a child type for that TrainingTypes document type.
Could you please tell me, which subversion of Kentico CMS are you using? Have you applied any hotfix?

We are using v5.5.3996 R2.
The screenshot is of the CMS desk area and the TrainingTypes document you saw was a folder and there is not truly a document type called TrainingTypes... the new document type I am trying to add is a training type basically, custom.TraingEventType.

That could be probably it. Actually, a folder is also a document type (CMS.Folder), so could you please check, if you have added your custom document type as a child type for a Folder type?

That was it! Finally, something so simple but held up so long. After enabling that I had everything working as expected within the hour. For developers who come from other CMS systems, that is not entirely intuitive, since most of the time it is automatically available.

Actually, that is the main idea. Everything is a document and you can create your own custom one, so the folder is one of them but only with one field for its name and with the folder icon :)
