Basic Questions from a complete Newbie
Hi,
I have developed a number of simple websites and one not so simple one using asp.net 3.5 via VSE 2008 but have not worked with CMS and only really scratched the surface with databases in my 'not so simple website' to provide a very crude CMS facility.
I am now looking at extending my horizons and one of my 'projects' is to develop a 'proper' CMS based site.

As VSE 2010 is now available with asp.net 4 I thought I would download the whole sherbang and start with the latest toolset. It offers me the opportunity to download Kentico and install it as part of the WPI .
Some basic questions:
Do I develop within VSE as I am used to and use Kentico controls to achieve CMS over certain parts of the page(s) or do I develop totally within Kentico (i.e. Kentico replaces VSE)
If the latter, are all the usual ASP.NET facilities available to control Master Pages, CSS etc available?
Can I add Kentico CMS to an existing web site?

I am confused about the licensing.
I am a small business developing just a few web sites a year for small businesses and personal use. Can I create the site, deploy to a live server and provide my customers with CMS facilities using the Free Edition (What restrictions might apply?) or do I need to purchase a licence either for development or deployment?

There are probably loads more questions I cannot think of at the moment but this should help me rationalise my thoughts.

Thanks in advance
Geoff

RE:Basic Questions from a complete Newbie
Hello,

You can use some functionality separately from Kentico, but usually our customers use Kentico as a development tool. You can also use the ASPX approach to create pages, so the main work is done in VS, but Kentico is still the basic frame of your application and VS is a mere tool. As I mentioned earlier, the most common way to develop a site is to use Kenticco and VS just in case of customization or developing custom webparts/controls. You can find a comparision of those two approaches in the following documentation.
Kentico is a common .NET application, so it uses all the mentioned (Master pages, CSS style sheets, ascx files...).
There is no standard way how to add Kentico to an already existing website. There are some approaches, but it usually causes more troubles than good and that is why we recommend to built the site in Kentico from start.

If your requirements don't exceed the limitations of the free license, you can use it for commercial projects, but you have to include "Powered by Kentico" logo or footer. You also don't get phone and e-mail support with the free license. You can do all the development and testing on the free license.

Best regards,
Boris Pocatko

Thanks Boris,
If I develop a site using a free licence, can I then purchase a licence at deployment time for my customer in order to provide aditional administratio roles for example?

Hello,

I am sorry for the delay. Yes, you can just change the license and go on developing.

Best regards,
