Minimum Files for Deployment (What can I delete off of production)?
I am trying to reduce the number of files that get deployed to production for several sites. Even a basic site can run more than 9000 files.

My ideal setup is to use a staging server where users can make content changes and then those changes get pushed to production. No content should be edited directly on production. Ideally I would like to remove the CMS Desk completely from the production servers. Is this possible, if I take out CMS desk, can I remove a bunch of the internal CMS controls and templates as well.

Do you have any info on what the minimum files needed for deployment are after removing templates, internal modules and webparts, etc?

Hi,

This is not recommended to do. It is fully up to you. But you have to be sure that the controls/web parts are not used at all.

Regarding the CMS Desk - I would not recommend this - what if you will need to change something that is not synchronized over content staging? For example document permissions, bizform data, forum posts, blog comments...

It depends on you which modules you use and if something goes wrong, we can't be responsible for any damages made by removing the web project files.

How about this. Since i sometimes use a poor modem the site can be a little bit slow to work in. But what if I create a site that looks exactly like our live site (copy all the files) to my local computer (keeping the database connections) and work locally?

That way I only have to connect to the database and not the site (the documents). I understand that i can’t change anything but the content in the database of course but would this approach be possible?

Hi,

Yes, this scenario is possible, but you need to ensure that someone else won't overwrite your changes when working at the same time - you will be logged locally and the other user on the main web server. Also, if there will be any changes in the physical files, you need to sync. those changes to the web server too. In this case I would like to recommend to setup Web farm synchronization.
