Subdomains or third-level domains
What is the best practice for configuring subdomains or third-level domains in IIS7 and Kentico CMS 4.x?
TLD.sitedomain.com (where the physical path is on the same level as root) or
sitedomain.com/subdomain (where there is an application running under the main site)?

Thanks for your help,
Richard

RE:Subdomains or third-level domains
Hi,

Here you can find instructions how to configure multiple web sites:
- on different domains
- on single domain in a subfolder

The configuration of the domain names is up to you and your DNS servers or on your ISP provider. Then you need also update the hosts entries in your IIS.

RE:Subdomains or third-level domains
Thanks for the reply.
I'm running Windows 2008 with IIS7.
The cmsdesk page tab and design tab return 404 errors. I have tried changing the application pool to Classic, but with no luck.
The rest of the cmsdesk is available, as is sitemanager and the site can be viewed outside of the cms.
Thanks,
Richard

RE:Subdomains or third-level domains
Hi,

Could you please open the IIS console and check the Handler Mappins settings for ".aspx" extension? I assume that you are using portal engine templates and in this case the pages are not physically placed on the disk, so you need to change the mapping. Please double click on the aspx extension -> Request restrictions and disable (set to false) the "Invoke handler only if request is mapped to:".

I hope it will help.

RE:Subdomains or third-level domains
I am using the portal engine.
The handler mappings configuration for the main web site has two instances of the .aspx extension enabled. PageHandlerFactory-Integrated and PageHandlerFactory-ISAPI-2.0. For both of these, the "Invoke handler only if request is mapped to:" is not checked.

RE:Subdomains or third-level domains
What IIS 7 config info do you need to better get a handle on this issue?

RE:Subdomains or third-level domains
Hi,

I am sorry for the delay. I do not see the ".aspx' extension behind the "home". Is it mitake by copy and paste or you have modified the friendly URL extension and you want to use extension less URLs? If yes, have you configured the IIS according to the URLs configuration?

Best Regards,

Hi,

I am sorry but from your post I am not clear if you had also configured the IIS according to the description and if the problem is still present. Thank you.

RE:Subdomains or third-level domains
Both the CMS and IIS have been configured for extension less urls.
The issue of not seeing the page or design frame of the subdomain is still present.

RE:Subdomains or third-level domains
Hi,

That is strange. Could you please send us to support(AT)kentico.com message with screen shots of the error page you are getting and also screen shots of the IIS configuration and folder structure as well as the physical folders structure?

Could you please try to set the IIS and CMS to use standard .aspx extenstion so we can see if the issue is in the extension less configuration or not? Thank you.
