The mentioned left and right images are mentioned like symbols near the menu item name. For example:

The “lower than” entity is the "right image" in this case. It appears just after the end of name.

Regrettably, it is not suitable for background.

You could configure the background image of menu items in your stylesheet. However, I am not sure how you could use the three images because the background image may be only one. You could create only one image and the menu items would need the fixed width.

Otherwise, you would need to use a 3rd party component or develop a custom menu.
