Categories vs. Tags
Dear Kentico development team:

I know in the "Web 2.0" world someone would (or should) slap me for asking, but as I'm sure you had to make a very clear distinction during development of these two modules (categories and tags), could you please explain to me the ideal situations in which you would choose one over the other? From an IA perspective, it seems almost exactly the same, or so close that it wouldn't matter which you choose.

Here's the outcome as I see it:

CATEGORIES:
- You manage a list of categories
- A document can be a member of one or more categories
- You can then use a WHERE clause to show documents in specific categories

TAGS:
- You manage a list of tags
- A document can be tagged with one or more tags
- You can then use a WHERE clause to show documents with specific tags
- Added bonus: tag cloud web part

What's the part I'm missing?

Thanks!
Elijah

RE:Categories vs. Tags
Hi,

I will try to explain the main difference:

The tags are "wild cards" - I mean, when editing document (or creating), usually there is a field where the user can add whatever he/she wants - words, phrases, etc.

Categories are pre-defined and given to be selected so you can e.g. follow some structure. Categories are related to the taxonomy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxonomy.

I hope it makes more sense now.

Best Regards,
Juraj Ondrus
