Retirement of the Old Kentico Marketplace

   —

It's been 10 and 1/2 years since we launched the original Marketplace. In that time, we've had 450+ amazing contributions extending the out-of-the-box functionality of Kentico and approximately 15,000 downloads per year. As the direction of Kentico changes, moving towards MVC and away from Web Forms, so must the Marketplace.

As such, six months ago, we launched a new Marketplace geared towards this transition. With the new Marketplace, we took a different approach and embraced an open-source model to create and distribute these new contributions. This submission model leverages the power of the existing community of developers from around the world, from a variety of industries, all with varying levels of experience to make contributions truly amazing! It's more transparent, placing the process more in the hands of developers. It opens up the submission and review process to the community, making plug-ins safer, while encouraging collaboration, sharing, inspiration and innovation.

Time to say goodbye

With the launch of the new Marketplace and a great set of submissions available, 52 at the time of this writing, it's time to start saying goodbye, farewell, aloha, ciao, ahoj to the old marketplace, prepare for its retirement and embrace the new!

On June 1, 2020, we will remove the old Marketplace and corresponding links. While we strongly recommend updating any links pointed at the old marketplace to the new, we will also be redirecting all incoming requests for the old marketplace to the new marketplace.

Old Marketplace submissions

To those developers who have taken the time and energy to develop such amazing contributions to the old Marketplace, we say thank you! The old Marketplace, and many sites, would not have been as successful without them. Due to the new Marketplace and our embrace of the open-source process, we will not be automatically migrating any of the current submissions to the new Marketplace.

We encourage you to resubmit them through the new submission model on GitHub, so future projects may benefit from your hard work and effort. You can find instructions on how to do resubmit your contributions to the new Marketplace here.

What happens to existing widgets I'm already using?

Because widgets are downloaded from the Marketplace and then uploaded to your instances of Kentico, they will not be affected by the retirement of the old Marketplace. If you have any documentation linking to a widget specifically, it should be removed and noted as no longer available.

If you are developing a new site, we recommend starting your search in the new Marketplace. In the scenario where you must use any of the old submissions, we recommend backing it up locally, as it may become inaccessible at a future date.

Ready to get started?

If you've got a contribution you'd like to share with the Kentico developer community, that is AWESOME 😁 and we can't wait to see it! We have a few basic requirements we ask which help us maintain and ensure the quality of the submissions to the Marketplace. You can find a list of these requirements here, as well as, how to create a submission to the Marketplace.
