Cloning Master Pages and WebParts
I have different master pages for different areas in the site which is all good.

I now want to build a new master page but don't really want to specify all the settings on different web parts again for this new master page. Things like specific shopping cart links, social links, newsletters, scripts, footers etc... Also, the new master page is quite different in layout so using an existing master is not an option here- and using visual inheritance is also not an option either.

To speed up developing this new master page, I would like to use an existing master page as a starting point for my new master page- and then just restructure my zones and further refine some settings on the existing webparts. I don't see an option to do that though?

Can I use the "discouraged" webparts settings tab for this purpose?

Which is to say, that's what I'm experimenting with at the moment. Is there any particular gotcha I should be aware of using this method - for this purpose :) ?

RE:Cloning Master Pages and WebParts
Ah- I did find the cloning dropdown option.. and then editing the category afterwards. A couple more little navigation steps and a bit different to the quick webparts cloning- but all good. Thanks!

Hi Bryan,

so is your issue solved at the moment? Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

Best regards,

RE:Cloning Master Pages and WebParts
It is, thank you, Martin.

I wanted to click a "solved" button somewhere. Maybe the next feature for the forums? ;)

I was just curious though, what constitutes an emergency on editing the web parts tab in master pages? Everything I've read so far says "please don't edit" but the feature is there for a reason I presume?

RE:Cloning Master Pages and WebParts
Hi Bryan,

Yes, the warning it there for a reason, because if you will change the XML settings, the whole WebPart can be broken and this can affect the functionality of your website. I would recommend you to back-up the original settings, e.g. in some text file, because there is no versioning used or any other way of going back after the changes are saved.

There is no "solved" button, but you can confirm some post as "accepted solution" (take a look at Ondrej Vasils blog - DevNet Improvements vol. 2), but good point, we will consider this functionality in the future version. Thank you for your suggestion!

Best regards,
