Emails stuck in queue
We had two instances last week where all email got stuck in the Kentico email queue. Both times the email sent immediately after clicking on the “Resend all” button. I did not see any errors in the event log.

The “Send queued e-mails” scheduled task is set to run every minute.

Is there any way to monitor the queue externally to get notified if messages are stuck, maybe using a SNMP monitor tool such as SolarWinds?

Does anyone know why the emails got stuck when the schedules task should have retried sending them every minute? The SMTP server was working because they sent immediately after I did a "Resend all".

We are running CMS version: 7.0.4836.

I will post more details about the failed messages if/when it happens again...

RE:Emails stuck in queue
Hello Xavier,

There may be some 3rd party tools which can be used to notify you if e-mails get stuck in the queue but they are not officially supported.

As for the issue itself, are there any additional details mentioned for the messages which were failed to be sent? Although as you say there are no errors or warnings in Event log, could you check suggestions described in the following Knowledge Base article - Problems with scheduler?

There is also an e-mail debug available which can help you resolve problems with newsletter, notification and other e-mails sent by Kentico CMS. Please refer to Developer's Guide - Debug e-mails.

Best regards,
Filip Ligac

Thanks for the feedback. I will need to wait for it to happen again before I can provide any additional details.

I will look into those links you gave in the mean while...

RE:Emails stuck in queue
I had this similar issue (in several installs). What it came down to were policy enforcement on the network the servers were on. For instance if a server is in a DMZ zone, ensure the firewall is open to access your internal mail server.

Before I knew this I went as far as creating a scheduled task to execute the "resend all" functionality and it worked temporarilly but the end result was resolving the issues with the network. I suggest getting a hold of your network folks and tracking an email from send to leaving your network before doing much more.
