If I understand you correctly the Unit is "what you choose it to be". The weight is reprezented by a field SKUWeight in System table Ecommerce - SKU and its attribute type is Decimal number (Double precision).

Basically it is storing only a number. The meaning of number is up to you what you choose it to be.
