Exact Copy of Site for development
Was wondering if you could and if there was a preferred method of making an exact copy of a site for development purposes?

For example when I go to my Site Manager screen I have "SiteA" listed. I want to have a "SiteADev" as well that is identical to "SiteA" except the URL to get there is different. That way I can make changes in the dev site, test them out, before I push them to the live site.

I have read several posts that the simple import/export can cause problems with underlining tables if you do this on the same kentico install. Are there any preferred methods to accomplish this?

Any guidance is appreciated.

RE:Exact Copy of Site for development
Hello,

but why you need to do this on the same Kentico instance? I would recommend you to use 2 different instances of Kentico for development purposes, this is also the only way how you can be sure that your live site won't be affected by changing some global settings on the Development site. Usually developers use not even 2 instances of Kentico but also 2 different machines for this purpose.

I don't see any problem running 2 instances of Kentico on the same computes and from my point of view... it's also the best and easiest way.

Best regards,

RE:Exact Copy of Site for development
Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking that might be the case but my predecessor suggested another way that put both (prod/dev) on the same instance.
Two servers is ideal but in our current setup we do not have that option right now.
Two seperate Kentico installs on the same machine seems ideal, wanted to make sure that was the "normal" and easiest approach to having a dev copy of a site.

Thanks.
