Linked documents and aliases
I am a bit confused with the way linked documents work. From the top level I linked a document a couple levels down in the tree, just to get a quick access from the main menu. The problem is that I can't seem to get the link to actually point to the original document, it points to an alias created in the top level.

How do I achieve that? I don't want to present duplicate documents to either Google or my users, just duplicate navigation paths (menu items).

RE:Linked documents and aliases
Oops. How to I avoid this behavior I meant, and nothing else :)

I want all linked documents to actually point to the original document location. By default if possible.

RE:Linked documents and aliases
Hello,

There are two options how to achieve that:

1) Create a new blank page without any template on the top level of your document hierarchy (instead of a link to a document) and set its URL redirection property (Properties -> Menu) to a document down in the tree.

2) Don't use navigation web part and generate your own menu code through the transformation in a Repeater web part, where you can select documents according their Menu Group properties or their IDs etc.

RE:Linked documents and aliases
Thank you for your suggestions. I will look into writing a custom navigation part to accomplish this.

I would however encourage you to implement an option in future versions of the system to have a single URL to any specific resource.

Alternatively and much simpler, you could add the rel="canonical" on all Navigation Links that are not aliases. Then at least Google and other search engines will always show the correct address in their indexes, regardless of if an alias is getting linked to by external resources.

RE:Linked documents and aliases
Hello,

There is a web part on our Market place, which creates links according to their alias path and renders them as canonical. Please follow the link below to our Market Place:

"Canonical link" web-part
