Comparing current users' rights to current document
Is there a direct way to do this? I'm not concerned, currently, with checking access to other documents, but I would like to check if the currently logged in user has access to 'this'.

You can use sample code from 'Checking if user is granted with given permission for a document' sub-section of Checking user permissions section of Dev.Guide.
