what's best for SEO ? one or multiple domains ?
I'm ready to deploy a website that have 5 languages and I have a doubt if for SEO purpose it is better to have only one domain (eg. mydomain.com) and do via IIS redirects from the local ones.

Eg.
www.mydomain.it -> www.mydomain.com/home?lang=it-IT
www.mydomain.de -> www.mydomain.com/home?lang=de-DE
ecc.

Or is it better to set inside Kentico domains and cultures ?
I'm afraid that setting different domains inside Kentico (like I did in the past) makes Google to think that I have duplicate content and lower the page rank...

Thanks
Sandro

Hi,

If you will set multiple domains for each language, the content rank will be split between the domains. So one domain name is better option from this perspective.

The best way is to use the language in the URL path, e.g. www.domain.com/en/home.aspx vs. www.domain.com/it/home.aspx. Right now, you need to create this folder structure manually in the content tree, but in version 6.0, this will be supported automatically. So, at least for the major documents in the web site I would recommend to create this structure.
Or, now you can set the URLs to be generated automatically - right now it works like this: www.domain.com/home-en.aspx vs. www.domain.com/home-it.aspx.
another option is to use Document URL path property and set it manually to what you need.

RE:what's best for SEO ? one or multiple domains ?
Thanks Juraj for your answer

after reading some SEO forum I agree one domain is better and also the directory splitting /en, /it etc would be the best solution.

I was thinking to create manually those folder, but then I realized I had lost the nice feature you offer to check which translation misses or is outdated (tab properties, menu Language).
Manually set via the Document Path would be maybe the best solution (a lot of work if you have many pages)

I don't like the suffix appended to the name, because I think "speaking" url like "mydomain.com/how-to-reach-us" is very nice

I added in my templates a "meta content-language" and "meta language"... it is a feature you could do automatically in your next release

thx again
Sandro

RE:what's best for SEO ? one or multiple domains ?
Hi,

Have you tried to create in the content tree e.g. folder with name "en", then change the language - copy content from existing language - and change the folder name to "it"? So in english culture the folder is named "en" but if you switch to Italian culture, it is called "it" - and you still can use the translation management.

I think one domain is better for one language. What u need is content must be unique. Then no problem for google to rank. Good seo internet marketing agency has better idea for advance seo thought that leads better ranking not only google but also all the search engines.

Thanks..
