Benefits of Permanent URLs
What are the benefits of using Permanent URL's in the system versus regular URLs. How does this impact or improve SEO? Are there any implications of choosing to use it and then changing your mind later?

RE:Benefits of Permanent URLs
Hello.

Permanent redirect (301) and its benefits in SEO is general topic, unrelated to Kentico CMS. We only support permanent URLs via a single setting in Site Manager / Settings / URLs and SEO. However, for more info about 301 and its benefits I would recommend you to read public articles about this topic. SEO itself is interesting and complex area of interest and there are many great articles and blogs about it. You can just google for “301 seo benefits” search phrase, or something similar. Thank you.

RE:Benefits of Permanent URLs
Actually if you read the question...I am asking what is the benefits of PERMANENT URL's. Not permanent redirects. It is a feature that is unchecked by default in Kentico setups so I wanted to know if there are pluses and minuses to using it since typically an unchecked default feature tells me that Kentico does not see most people using it.

RE:Benefits of Permanent URLs
Hello.

On top of what is already written here, I would like to add that permanent URLs are worst for user (less user-friendly), as they are longer and they contain GUID, but from SEO perspective itself, it does not matter for SEO engine what URL it indexes. So, just from SEO point of view, permanent URLs should be comparable to friendly URLs.

RE:Benefits of Permanent URLs
One of the benefits of permanent urls is that they will still resolve to the correct document even if it is moved to somewhere else in the tree without a document alias pointing to it's original location.

Also, as far as I have seen in 5.5R2, if you save the images and files that you place on a page as Attachments and then place those images or links to those files in the content of that page without using permanent URLS and then move that page, the links to those files and images will become broken. If you use permanent URLs, you can move the page anywhere you want and the Attachments not only move with the page, but the links and image tags in your content will still work. (This seems to have been fixed in version 6 as the attachments handler seems to use document aliases to find the resource)

*Another benefit of using permanent urls is for when other sites like to link to your pages. If you move those pages or change the document alias without keeping the original path as an alias then the links on those other sites would become broken. Not so if you use permanent urls.

When you turn on the Use Permanent URLS, you can also turn on the "Redirect document aliases to main URL" setting so that the final url that it is resolved to will be the one with the document path. *if you use this feature, the benefit above will not work.

RE:Benefits of Permanent URLs
To answer the other part of your question about impacting SEO. Using permanent URLs could have a very slight negative effect on it since the URL won't contain any possible keywords in the path. However, as long as you use descriptive Document Page Titles and Document Page Descriptions in the Meta Data of the page, I see no reason to worry.

If you choose to use it and then change your mind later, the only thing that you might find irritating is that you will end up with a mixture of permanent and not permanent URLs in your content. All this feature really does is change what path is automatically generated for you when you use the insert image/media/link dialog in the HTML editor. It doesn't even change the urls in the CMSMenu to permanent ones.

In all reality, it wouldn't really cause problems if you use it and then change your mind later.
