Visual Studio 2008 freezing when saving project files
This likely has more to do with Visual Studio than Kentico, but I figured I would post and see if anyone else is experiencing the issues I am having working on Kentico projects using Visual Studio 2008 (Version 9.0.21022.8 RTM).
I have deployed a half-dozen Kentico implementations so far, but with three of them, I am no longer able to save any files that belong to the project once I have opened the solution in Visual Studio. When attempting to save a file, Visual Studio will hang, and the Delay Notification icon will appear in the tray. No matter how long I leave it, it will not eventually save the file, and I have to end the process.
Has anyone else experienced issues like this? I have never had this issue with a non-Kentico project. I have re-installed Visual Studio, but the problem persists. I have tried creating new solutions and adding the existing files to them, but the problem persists.

Hi,
We have encountered similar issue in the past. But it was when opening the project. We have found that the sln project file was made for Visual Studio 2005 and .Net 2.0 and there were some incorrect paths in it - probably caused by converting the project to .Net 3.5 and Visual Studio 2008.
Moreover, I have asked our developers and they are encountering this issue quite often. But they are working on the source code solution with source control and this may cause the issue that the Visual Studio is not responding e.g. when checking in the changes etc. They have to kill the Visual Studio process.

I updated Visual Studio 2008 to SP1, that still did not work. What I eventually had to do to fix the problem is install a fresh Kentico site on my system (using a new name) and then copy all of my files into the new project. Annoying, but at least I can work on my project again.

It has been awhile since I have posted this problem, but I have since performed a complete reinstall of my system.
For some reason (and very much to my dismay), even with a completely fresh install of Windows and a fresh install of Visual Studio 2008, the very same projects that were freezing Visual Studio before are STILL doing it, as if nothing has changed.
The plot thickens...

I am also encountering this problem which is making it impossible for me to do any development on the Kentico web site code base. Is there any work around? Besides re installing kentico.
I am working on a code base that is checked out from SVN.

I have one more idea - I am not sure if it is possible to get this, but if there is any kind of log for Visual Studio, or maybe system log or some memory dump, from which we can see what is going on, it could be helpful.

I think I've narrowed down the cause. The project I inherited contains some work done in VB.NET. Some modules written in that variety of .NET. And it seems that it could be the cause of the visual studio problems. When I created a new kentico site I no longer had the problems.
So, I'm getting by. Thanks for your help and ideas. I will probably look into things more and try to find a visual studio memory dump, or something of that nature when I have time.

We are experiencing this problem on a number of our sites now. It has been occuring more frequently since we started using Subversion source control. Are there any known issues with Kentico projects under source control?

...it seems to be the CMS.Staging.dll that's causing the problem. Removing this from the project stops it freezing. Obviously the cms cannot work without this dll so this is not a solution. Any ideas?

We have never encountered this issue in our development nor many customers who are also using version control.
It is very strange. Could you please check if there are any errors logged in the Windows event log?
What exactly happens? Do you have to kill Visual studio or it will start responding after some time?

CMS.Staging.dll isn't causing the problem with me, but I have managed to get around these issues by removing all Kentico-related folders that I am not working with from my local solution and from Subversion.
I am basically left with the CMSTemplates and CMSWebParts folders, and then I'm at least able to work my projects.
This is not at all a permanent solution, and I will try to pinpoint what exactly is causing Visual Studio to hang when I get some time to mess around.

We have been experiencing exactly the same problems on two different development computers and in both Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Visual studio does not actually crash, but simply hangs (without using any system resources) -- so it appears that there is some sort of deadlock occuring.

Thanks but there are no recent dumps, the last one was from a system crash in December. Nothing is actually crashing here, just hanging. If you leave it for an hour or so it sorts itself out.

Waited a while and managed to get a more meaningful error after one of the hangs sorted itself out:

Hi,
Thank you for the error, but TicketDetail.ascx is not Kentico's default web part or control. It seems that it is your custom code which is causing the issue. Could you please try to remove it from project to see if VS will freeze again? If not, could you please review your code in that web part?

Hi all,
thought I would chime in - I am also having this problem. First using vs2008wSP1 Team System, then using vs2010rc1 Pro. This is happening on a clean install of Windows7 (2 weeks old). I use TortoiseSVN and VisualSVN (as I did on my previous OS). Happens when I save and also sometimes just using the scrollbar. I am using Kentico 5.0. I have used previous versions of Kentico, and 5.0 on the same machine before with no problems. The clean rebuild seemed to kill it. I am not having issues building other WebForm or MVC applications.
I am reduced to using Notepad++ for Kentico development. Very keen for a solution to emerge.
