Upgrade from 3.1a - Animated GIF avatars
I just completed an upgrade from 3.1a to 4.0. I noticed that animated GIF avatars are no longer animated...just a static image. I'm currently looking into why this may have happened. To add, it doesn't appear to be browser specific. I will post again if I find the reason or work around. Just thought I'd let you know of this "bug."

RE:Upgrade from 3.1a - Animated GIF avatars
Hi,

could you please specify which avatars do you mean? E.g. where were these avatars used (and stored) in 3.1a? Was this supposed to be a default feature or some customization?

Thank you in advance for information.

Regards,
Zdenek C.

RE:Upgrade from 3.1a - Animated GIF avatars
The avatars are used in the forum and are uploaded by users in the My Account page. They are stored in CMSGlobalFiles\UserPictures. One other thing to note is that the image sizes have changed, but they may have just reverted back to a default size (which is not a big deal). I've asked for the users to re-upload their animated GIF avatars to see if that fixes the issue.

RE:Upgrade from 3.1a - Animated GIF avatars
Perhaps, instead of the term avatar, I should have said User Picture?

Not sure if this helps, but it appears that all user uploaded user pictures are being resized in the forum to 80 x 80. The resizing appears to be causing the issue with animated GIFs losing their animation. The resizing seems to have changed or been implemented after the upgrade from 3.1a to 4.0. I'm trying to see how I can change the resizing back, but can't find it.

RE:Upgrade from 3.1a - Animated GIF avatars
Ok, so now I can give an intelligent comment about the bug, now that I've remembered where to change the avatar size for the forum. In 3.1a, in the forum group webpart, I'd set the "Avatar Max Side Size" to 150, but after the conversion to 3.1a, it reverted back to 80. Obviously, this is not a big deal, but thought you'd want to know. Sorry for the confusion earlier in my posting.

RE:Upgrade from 3.1a - Animated GIF avatars
A little bit more on this same topic... I've noticed that uploaded User Pictures that are animated GIFs are converted and stored as JPG. I'm not sure why. Is there a way to change this setting?

RE:Upgrade from 3.1a - Animated GIF avatars
Hi Sean,

Could you please check if your gif's are not too large for avatars? Images are converted only when they are resized to meet avatar's size requirements.

RE:Upgrade from 3.1a - Animated GIF avatars
If you mean dimensions (not file size or dpi) then, yes, the GIFs are withing the avatar size constraint...unless I'm checking the wrong place.
Under Site Manager -> Settings -> Avatars, I have everything set to 250 (the GIF is max. 225). Is there another place I should be checking the setting?

RE:Upgrade from 3.1a - Animated GIF avatars
Hi Sean,

You are right - the animated gifs do not work because of jpg converting. We have fixed it just now in the 4.1 version which will be released this week. Please upgrade then and you will be able to use them without problems.

Best regards,
Helena Grulichova
